Martin J Dougherty:
Writer, Swordsman and General Nuisance
You have successfully located, stumbled upon or somehow been ambushed by the homepage of Martin J Dougherty, or MJD. (Yes, *that* MJD).
There are few good reasons for being here, but they might include: my books, my television work, my defence & security work, an interest in martial arts, self defence or fencing, or something else entirely. Or maybe we met some time.
The photo at left was taken just after the smallsword/duelling sabre tournament at Spring Exchange a couple of years back. Facial hair comes and goes; the disapproving stare is pretty much constant.
Anyway, this is me. Enjoy.

MJD at a Glance
I am a prolific published author. For the most part I write fiction and non-fiction books, though I also work in other areas. These include copywriting, research and writing for television, and a significant amount of material for the games industry. I have appeared TV shows including Triggers: Weapons That Changed The World and William Shatner's UneXplained.
I spent some time on the lecture circuit for the defence and security industry, chairing a major conference in 2002 and presenting papers at various other events. More recently I have consulted for online media regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
My main interest outside of work is historical fencing. I have been President of the British Federation for Historical Swordplay for several years. I was previously very active in the martial arts/self-defence field, though my attention is more on armed combat these days.
